FAQ

What's with the name?

The name "Conductor Coffee" actually has multiple funnels of influence. First and foremost, Jonathan and Katy's daughters love trains. Katy's home-base is in De Soto, Mo which has a rich history in the railroad industry. In fact, the St. Louis & Iron Mountain Railroad constructed the main line in 1857 to De Soto from St. Louis. The line was constructed to bring iron ore from Iron Mountain, Mo., to St. Louis. The rail car shop in De Soto was constructed in 1865. To this day, De Soto hosts annual "Railroad Days" and even a Railroad Memorial.

Just how fresh is this coffee?

We take the freshness of your cup of coffee very seriously. In order to ensure all of the flavor notes are shining properly, we roast to order to guarantee the freshest cup.

Why does the inventory change so frequently?

There are many coffee companies that serve the same coffee varieties throughout the year and that is a perfectly great model to use. We here at Conductor Coffee wanted to take our community on a different journey that makes many stops across the world so you never know what our inventory holds on a weekly (or daily) basis. Part of the fun of trying new coffee is finding what you like... whether it be fruity, floral or chocolatey, everyone's preferences are different. Will you go on this journey with us? Make sure to bookmark our Store page to stay in-the-know :)

What is single origin coffee?

Put simply, single origin coffee is "coffee that’s sourced from one single producer, crop, or region in one country" (perfectdailygrind.com). So instead of common blends such as breakfast, Spring, or donut shop, you are purchasing coffee that can be traced to the source. If your bag is labeled Ethiopia Yirga Chefe, it contains beans from the town of Yirga Chefe, located in the country of Ethiopia, and all of the flavor notes that can be read on the bag are unique to that beautiful region.

What is Washed vs Natural (Dry) processing?

Coffee processing is the separation of the cherry fruit and mucilage from the coffee seeds (beans) themselves. There are a variety of processing types that can take place including Washed, Natural (Dry), Honey and more. With Washed Processing, beans are completely de-pulped, removing all of the cherry fruit. Then they are soaked and allowed to ferment for 12 to 72 hours before being washed clean of any remaining fruit and dried. With Natural (Dry) Processing, whole coffee cherries are left to dry in the sun, leaving the fruit on the bean. Natural fermentation occurs resulting in the creation of complex flavors and sugars (often notes of berries and citrus). Once the cherries are dry, the skin and dried fruit are removed mechanically and the green coffee is stored before exporting.
